What Is Housing Counseling?

A Counselor in Your Corner

HUD-approved housing counseling agencies are trained and certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They work with individuals and families at every stage of the housing journey β€” from first-time buyers getting ready to purchase, to homeowners facing foreclosure, to renters navigating a difficult landlord situation.

Sessions typically cover budgeting, credit review, mortgage options, rental rights, and long-term financial planning. Most services are free or offered on a sliding-fee scale.
